A student may spend weeks developing a meaningful essay and then discover another Common App prompt that appears to fit the topic better. That does not automatically mean the essay should be restarted.
The topic is only the beginning
Admissions readers learn from the details, reflection and development of the story. A familiar topic can become a strong essay when it reveals something specific and genuine about the student.
Prompts are flexible
Many strong essays could reasonably fit more than one prompt. Choose the prompt that best accommodates the finished piece rather than forcing the piece to chase a prompt.
Revise before restarting
First ask whether the essay has a clear focus, enough reflection and an authentic voice. A targeted revision may solve the real problem.
