Students often build an essay around one prompt, then question the prompt choice when the draft is almost complete. That does not automatically mean the essay should be rebuilt.
The prompt is a doorway
The strength of the essay comes from the story, specificity, reflection and authentic student voice. A well-developed essay may reasonably fit more than one prompt.
Core principle:
Develop the story first. Confirm the most natural prompt after the essay has taken shape.
Before starting over, ask:
- What does the essay reveal about the student?
- Is there a specific moment or experience?
- Does the reflection show insight or change?
- Does the writing sound like the student?
- Can the existing essay reasonably answer an available prompt?
Prompt shopping can become procrastination
Changing the prompt label may be appropriate. Abandoning a strong story without evaluating it first usually creates unnecessary work and more stress.
College requirements change. Verify current deadlines and policies directly with each college and official testing organization.
